Stocking up on gasoline
Store sees demand grow
for extra-large secondary fuel tanks
By Michele Clock
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
June 28, 2008
SANTEE – For some drivers, gas-price relief can be found at a
strip mall tucked away in Santee.
There,
inside a cavernous garage piled high with auto parts, a team of
mechanics has been busy installing extra-large secondary fuel
tanks.
As gas
prices reach once-unthinkable levels, drivers are turning to
these bigger-than-normal tanks to fill up with more fuel at once
– making the trip to Mexico for cheap gas even more lucrative.

Jose Gonzalez installs a
secondary tank that can hold 98 gallons for a diesel
truck at Express Performance Center in Santee. |

|
|
“It
seems like people are panicking,” said Tim Abbas, co-owner of
Express Performance Center, which has sold 13 tanks this month,
compared with 10 or 11 last year.
“They want
to get as much gas as they can” when they go to Mexico, Abbas
said. |
